Maybe you can play the notes... but it's oddly deflating because...well...Yo-Yo doesn't sound all scratchy and tinny like this...right?
Maybe you hesitate to even call yourself a cellist because...if you can't sound good on the Prelude, then how can you be a cellist?
It's very painful to hear beautiful phrases in your head but have no idea of how to produce them from your instrument...I get that...I have been there...
When you try to concentrate on the bowing, your pitch falls out of tune.
And when you think about the pitch, the bowing runs out...
So let's separate them and work on each element separately, so that you can actually improve on pitch first, and then on your bowing.
We will work the pitch against drones and open strings. With single bows. So the bowing doesn't mess you up.
And then we will work the bowing. So you can actually get better at this piece and start to play it with precision and fluidity.
Bowing in Bach can be very challenging, so it makes sense that you might be having trouble finding and maintaining a beautiful sound within the phrases.
90 percent of the cellists I work with are having troubles slurring eight notes per bow on this Bach. It's a major challenge for almost everyone.
It's not just you!
And hey- pitch is always a problem. So we always need to work on that...slowly...
So- if you are having pitch problems, and if you are also having bowing problems...
You don't need to panic.
Just take a deep breath...and let's work on it...
Join us for the Bootcamp!
Come learn the right hand - left hand method of cello playing.
Right hand work: learn to get a soulful sound
Left hand work: learn to play in tune and stay in tune
When we work on these two core elements of cello playing individually, we finally start to be able to understand the true problems, and we can then problem solve.
One small step at a time to a more beautiful musical experience...for you, and for those that are listening to you...
But don't worry- you will be on mute for the Bach Cello Bootcamp. You don't have to play for anyone...
In this camp Cello Guru Marcie Brown wil explore the difficulties that arise with the playing of this prelude. We will work through bowings, bow distribution and string crossings for fluid and musical phrasing, find creative pitch, and help you to choose your own unique and expressive rendition of this lovely music.
This class is for anyone interested in getting into the basics of the Bach First Prelude on their cello. It's best suited for intermediate level players that have some knowledge of the the first four positions on the cello.
That being said, students of all levels are invited. Beginners can get started by listening and becoming familiar with the piece, and those with more technique can go deeper into their study.

"I’m an experienced but good amateur cellist… I just finished my first series of classes with Marcie and what a personally rewarding result! Her very personable passion and style are an inspiration and propellant for pursuing new playing milestones.
I never thought of playing any portion of the Bach Suites....and whenever I heard them I 'knew' they were above my capability. The Cello Guru showed me I was wrong! "
