I'm Marcie Brown, and I'm the Cello Guru.

When I was in the Cirque du Soleil "O" show, we performed two shows a day, ten shows a week, and there wasn't much time to do anything else. 

Late at night, after performing all day on the Las Vegas strip beside clowns, fire eaters, Mongolian contortionists, and Olympic divers and swimmers, I would pull out a small notebook and write down my practice goals for the next morning. I had figured out that when I scheduled things in my brain, and then I wrote them down on paper, they magically happened. 

Playing the same music from the same show over and over, night after night, was not going to keep me in shape or make me a better cellist. But even with my challenging schedule, I was determined to improve. 

I was able to not only pump out soulful cello melodies and electrified rock and roll solos into the jam packed O Show Theatre every night, but I also worked through Bach Suites and Brahms Sonatas in the mornings to find some depth and some integrity in my classical studies.

Because I wrote down my goals, and then I held myself accountable, I was able to progress, and the following year, after 600 circus shows, I was able to win an audition to play with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra.

But that's a story for another day.

Now I am a guru, and my students are the rock stars.
